On April 7, 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned the public about the use of over-the-counter (OTC) products containing benzocaine. Benzocaine is a local anesthetic and is the active ingredient in many OTC products used to relieve pain in the mouth and gums from a variety of conditions such as teething, canker sores, and irritation of the mouth and gums.

OTC benzocaine products come in the form of gels, sprays, liquids and lozenges. Benzocaine use may cause a rare, but serious, condition where the amount of oxygen that can be carried through the blood stream is greatly reduced. This condition is called methemoglobinemia.

FDA is particularly concerned about the use of OTC benzocaine products in children for relief of pain from teething because of the serious outcomes that may be associated with methemoglobinemia, as well as the difficulty parents or consumers may have in recognizing the signs and symptoms of methemoglobinemia when using these products at home. Furthermore, symptoms of methemoglobinemia may not always be evident or attributed to the condition.

According to the FDA, parents and caregivers should not use OTC benzocaine products on children under two years of age, except under the advice and supervision of a healthcare professional. If benzocaine products are used, it should be used sparingly and only when needed, but not more than four times a day.

For more information on the FDA’s safety announcement regarding benzocaine, please visit fda.gov.

“As a holistic pediatrician, I prefer safe, natural remedies that consistently relieve undesirable symptoms. Boiron’s Camilia definitely falls within this category. I routinely recommend Camilia for the pain and irritability that can accompany teething. Several parents have told me that after a couple of doses, their babies open their mouths with excited anticipation when the Camilia is pulled out!”

“Camilia was helpful in taking the edge off of the teething pain. [A parent told me that] even her baby’s babysitter noticed that for several hours after a single dose, the baby was less clingy and irritable.”

—Heather McDonald, DO, Los Angeles, Calif.

“Camilia has given many of the babies that I care for relief from teething pain from a natural medicine. I prefer homeopathic medicines manufactured by Boiron for my patients with complex medical problems taking multiple medications to reduce the risk of adverse medication reactions.”
“I keep a stock box of Camilia in my office. I often use it to calm irritable teething infants and toddlers in my office to make the whole “trip to the doctor” experience more comfortable for everyone! I recommend it to all my new moms who have had nothing but positive things to say about how Camilia calms their babies.”

“I am a pediatrician practicing in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago. For the past three years, I have incorporated homeopathy in my practice with great success. I have been using many homeopathic medications on daily basis. Camilia is one of the most commonly used products. I recommend it for painful gums and irritability caused by teething. Like all homeopathic medications, it is safe and has no side effects, and works naturally with the body. It doesn’t pose the risk of overmedicating or numbing a baby’s gag reflex, and it doesn’t contain sugar, preservatives or benzocaine, a substance that is no longer recommended by FDA for use in children less than 2 years of age.”

—Elzbieta Lojewski, MD, Oak Mill Pediatrics, Niles, Ill.

“All families deal with teething discomfort at some point, and many do not want to use pharmaceutical medicines or products with artificial ingredients to help deal with it. I highly recommend Camilia teething drops because they are gentle, safe and easy to administer. The families I work with really appreciate this natural and effective way to offer support to their children.”

—Heather A Jeney, MD, Integrative Pediatrician, Oradell, N.J.

“Camilia was a good addition to my arsenal of natural products to help babies and their parents. It works well and tastes great, plus it’s safe.”

Camilia is packaged in sterile, shatterproof single-dose tubes. This eliminates the need for preservatives and guards against contamination—a feature appreciated by parents with a teething baby. When babies are not their most cooperative, just snap off the cap and squeeze the tube’s pre-measured liquid into the infant’s mouth. There’s no wresting with children over this clear, tasteless liquid.

This small amount (.034 fl oz) is absorbed sublingually without numbing the gums or affecting the gag reflex. No messy clean-ups. No need to know the child’s weight. And no need to worry about applying gel to the correct area with your finger or about infants potentially choking.

How to Care for Your Baby’s New Teeth

According to the Mayo Clinic, you should run a clean, damp washcloth over your baby’s gums every day, even before he gets his first tooth. So if you’re not doing it already, now’s a great time to start. The washcloth can keep bacteria from building up in your baby’s mouth. When your baby’s first teeth appear, switch to a small, soft-bristled toothbrush. There’s no need to use toothpaste. Water is all you need until your child learns to spit—at about age two.

It’s also time to think about regular dental checkups. The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend scheduling a child’s first dental visit after the first tooth erupts and no later than his first birthday. Your baby’s teeth and gums will also be examined at well-baby checkups. Remember, regular childhood dental care helps set the stage for a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

Tips for Soothing Baby’s Sore Gums

Not sure what’s the best way to ease your teething baby’s pain? The Mayo Clinic offers these great tips for soothing your baby’s sore gums:

Rub your baby’s gums

Use a clean finger, moistened gauze pad or damp washcloth to massage your baby’s gums. The pressure can ease your baby’s discomfort.

Offer a teething ring

Try one made of firm rubber. The liquid-filled variety may break under the pressure of your baby’s chewing. If a bottle seems to do the trick, fill it with water. Prolonged contact with sugar from formula, milk or juice may cause tooth decay.

Keep it cool

A cold washcloth or chilled teething ring can be soothing. Don’t give your baby a frozen teething ring, however. Contact with extreme cold may hurt, doing your baby more harm than good. If your baby’s eating solid foods, offer cold items such as applesauce or yogurt.

Dry the drool

Excessive drooling is part of the teething process. To prevent skin irritation, keep a clean cloth handy to dry your baby’s chin. You might also make sure your baby sleeps on an absorbent sheet.

An over-the-counter medicine like Camilia also works to relieve your baby’s painful gums and irritability caused by teething. To find a store near you that carries Camilia, visit our product locator.
